Jack Nicklaus’s wildly dramatic Quivira Golf Club grabbed the attention of golfers from the moment it opened on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula in 2013.

The sixth course built in booming Los Cabos by the Golden Bear is defined by windswept dunes, sheer mountain cliffs and desert foothills. It’s the centrepiece of Quivira, a luxury resort development at the Baja Peninsula’s southern tip. Quivira includes two resorts, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa and Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort and Spa, and three real estate communities.

“Our team has worked with the canvas Mother Nature provided to create what we hope is one of the most spectacular courses in the world,” Nicklaus said. “This property afforded us a rare opportunity because of its topographic diversity and natural environment.”

All 18 holes at 7,224-yard Quivira Golf Club offer vistas of the Pacific Ocean and, during the winter months, thrilling views of breaching whales.

More than eight years in the making, Nicklaus’s US$40-million layout starts near the sea before climbing more than 107 metres. The spectacular 1.2-kilometre drive between the fourth and fifth holes crosses arroyo-spanning bridges and traces a switchback route up the side of a mountain.

The sixth hole is equally dramatic. The par three features a concave cliff-top green carved from the base of a massive dune. Nicklaus’s routing weaves through still more dunes before returning to the cliffs for a grand finale: The par-four 18th plays to an infinity-edge green overlooking the crashing Pacific.

Quivira Golf Club is accessible to guests of the four Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas in Los Cabos, as well as to property owners at Quivira’s three real estate communities: Copala, Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas, and Novaispania Residences.
